SAI TRIO (Spain)

KRAKOW JAZZ AUTUMN
Sai Trio is three totally different personalities masterfully bringing together jazz and dance. The Barcelona group opted for an unusual setup, which merges performance art and music – all of it improvised.

Sai Trio is pianist Agustí Fernández, drummer Ivo Sans, and dancer Sònia Sánchez, who bravely pushes the boundaries of flamenco and butoh.

Agustí Fernández is described by The Village Voice “one of the most important explorers of avant-garde music in Spain, combining his thorough knowledge of 20th-century modern classical piano with jazz free improvisation to a forge a unique and powerful style”. The pianist, born in Palma de Mallorca, has collaborated with Peter Kowald and Derek Bailey, and in 2002 joined Barry Guy’s New Orchestra. He and Parker play together in the Evan Parker Electroacoustic Ensemble.

Ivo Sans is mostly seen behind the drum kit, but his passions also include dance and sculpture. He started playing the drums as a teenager, at the instigation of a friend. His family’s music library included albums by The Beatles, Nina Simone, Beethoven and Vinicius de Moraes. These artists sparked the drummer’s interest in music. Today, Sans has a band called ISCCJMKMB with Cesar Joaniquet, Masa Kamaguchi and Marcel·lí Bayer.

Performing onstage with the musicians in flamenco innovator Sònia Sánchez. Educated in classical dance, nowadays Sánchez creates her own style of flamenco dancing, stripping the traditional form down to focus on technique and minimalism. Ever since she discovered Japanese butoh dancing and Body Weather (a form of training of the mind and the body), she has been using the influences to present her own take on flamenco.
