OLBRZYM I KURDUPEL + WILLI HANNE

Minimalist duo Olbrzym i Kurdupel was formed in 2007 in Gdynia after a jam session, as a result of a joint musical quest of bassist Marcin Bożek and saxophonist Tomasz Gadecki. The musicians quickly earned the support of both the critics and the audience, who didn’t have to wait long for the debut album. The record Frrrrrr…, self-released in 2008, gained enthusiastic reviews from the get-go, opening the way for the band to play on the best jazz stages in Poland.

Their dynamic, casual improvisation for bass and saxophone is extremely fresh and unique, a testament to the distinctive and recognizable style of the group. This is confirmed by the duo’s next well received albums: Six Philosophical Games (Electriceye, 2012) and Work (Kilogram Records, 2014). The website FYH! Reviewed In Side Shout (Requiem Records, 2015), recorded together with German drummer Willi Hanne: “The trio did a good job (…) Casual and light in tone, but at the same time touching all of the senses.”

Marcin Bożek is a graduate of the Faculty of Jazz and Entertainment Music at the Academy of Music in Katowice. He has received numerous awards at many national jazz festivals. Tomasz Gadecki is known for his collaboration with artists who boldly go beyond jazz, such as Contemporary Noise Sextet, or the recently celebrated internationally psychedelic and space-rock outfit Lonker See. Moreover, the duo can be proud of their cooperation with outstanding figures of improvised jazz, such as Mikołaj Trzaska, Rafał Mazur or Keir Neuringer.

At Alchemia they will be joined by the German drummer Willi Hanne. He is a member of the Anja Mohr Trio, Klaus Spencker Trio, Lars Kuklinski Quartett, Männer Angstfrei, Shesh and Uncle Zeco Quartet. His collaborators include Stacey Kent, Stephan Abel, Nahawa Doumbia, Ulli Orth, Urna Chahar-Tugchi, Wu Wei, Matthias Nadolny, Rolf Zielke, Lars Kukliński and Lothar Müller. He is also a lecturer associated with the Universität Hildesheim near Hannover.
