“The trio of saxophonist Dave Rempis, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love has the capacity to annihilate ears, but the art here is the manner in which they run their race” writes Mark Carroto at All About Jazz. This freejazz power trio met for the first time in a closed session in 2009. The uncompromising energy of Rempis and Nilssen-Love, combined with Lonberg-Holm’s electrifying cello, guarantee a strong impression that combines rhythm with loud textures and occasional melodic interjections. These shifting and overlapping rhythms often give the impression that the band is slowly pulling out a carpet from under the listener. Some of the band’s inspirations are Julius Hemphill’s 70’s and 80’s bands with Abdul Wadud, Ornett Coleman’s Prime Time and Miles Davis’ early 70’s bands.
Paal Nilssen-Love is a drummer who needs no introduction to Krakow’s audiences, but let’s remind ourselves of a few facts. The Norwegian says that he grew up in a jazz club, which was run by his parents. He studied jazz at the University of Trondheim, and at the age of 20 he was already known on the national scene, and today his fame has a considerably bigger reach. Some of his projects include The Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Atomic, School Days, The Thing, Frode Gjerstad Trio, Sten Sandell Trio, Scorch Trio, Territory Band, FME, as well as various duo projects (with Ken Vandermark, John Butcher, Mats Gustafsson, Nils Henrik Asheim, and Lasse Marhaug).
The openness of the Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis‘s saxophonist to cooperation results in new projects at a truly amazing pace. His projects include The Rempis Percussion Quartet, The Engines, Rempis/Abrams/Ra, Wheelhouse, Triage, The Rempis/Rosaly Duo and The Rempis/Daisy Duo. He has also collaborated with Paul Lytton, Fred Anderson, Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake, Tomeka Reid, Steve Swell, Elisabeth Harnik, John Tchicai, Roscoe Mitchell, Nate Wooley, Jaimie Branch, Kevin Drumm, Paal Nilssen-Love, Nels Cline and Joe McPhee. In 2013 he founded his own label Aerophonic Records. Since 2006 Rempis has been regularly mentioned in the annual Downbeat critics’ poll as a “rising star” in the alto and baritone saxophone category (a title he received in 2017). He has also curated weekly concerts at the Elastic Arts Foundation, helped form the Umbrella Music collective and its annual music festival, and worked as the main organizer of a series of concerts at the Downtown Sound Gallery at Gallery 37. He is also a co-organizer of the Pitchfork Music Festival.
Cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm moved from New York to Chicago in 1995. His versatile talents and pragmatic approach have made him one of the most sought-after session musicians and arrangers, but above all, a worthy companion for great names such as Mats Gustafsson, Peter Brötzmann, Frode Gjerstad and Michael Zerang. He accompanies Ken Vandermark in Territory Band, The Frame Quartet, Pipeline, Topology Nonet and Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet. The catalogue of his collaborators also includes, among others, artists such as Jim O’Rourke, Bobby Conn, The Flying Luttenbachers, Lake Of Dracula, Wilco, Rivulets, Sten Sandell, Jaap Blonk, John Butcher.
