Charlotte Hug has, in a way, reinvented the violin. She performs on a violin made by esteemed luthier J.G. Thir in 1763. Hug’s voice (sometimes called a siren’s voice) is equally as important an instrument as her magnificent violin. She wants her concerts to be closer to theater performances than to concert performances, both in terms of content and place. This is probably why she performed at the foot of the Rhône Glacier in Switzerland, or inside a former German bunker near the Berlin Humboldthain metro station.
Hug is somewhat controversial for some, and fresh and original for others. Her talent finds support not only in her music itself, but also in the the artists she collaborated with. She performed with such notable musicians as Joan Jeanrenaud (Kronos Quartet), Maggie Nicols, Barry Guy, Phil Minton, Larry Ochs and Evan Parker. She has collaborated with photographer and filmmaker Alberto Venzago, theater and opera director Jossie Wieler, and won international acclaim with her own visual music project Son-Icons. When she’s not recording on performing, she finds time for academic work. Hug lectures at colleges in Zurich, Montreal and Chicago.
Those who have seen Charlotte Hug on stage with Lucas Niggli stress the incredible chemistry between these artists. Hug’s unpredictability finds in Niggli a solid foundation for creative improvisation. This experienced drummer shared stages with such accomplished artists as Barry Guy, John Cale, Pierre Favre, Trevor Watts, Fred Frith, Tom Cora, Ikue Mori and Irene Schweizer. Niggli has also co-created collaborations with Black Lotus, Xu Fengxia (who plays the guzheng, a Chinese instrument resembling a zither), a drummer duo with Peter Conradin Zumthor, and Trio Klick (with Fritz Hauser and P.C. Zumthor). Lucas Niggli has already performed at Krakow Jazz Autumn several times, with, to name but a few, the Barry Guy Blue Shroud Band or Beyond Trio.
So there you go – two musicians who are going to start something of a musical fire on stage. Hug and Niggli are sure to be one of this year’s festival’s highlights. Make sure not to miss it!
