Barry Guy, a double bass virtuoso who masterfully mixes classical and improvised music, also works with Niggli and Wickihalder in The Blue Shroud Band and Barry Guy New Orchestra. Beyond Trio is a separate project of theirs, an intergenerational alliance of talented instrumentalists, with Wickihalder at the helm. He’s the author of Beyond Trio’s compositions, which reviewers describe as “a starting point for for musical dialogue” and an “adventurous journey into the world of improvised music”.
The Swiss-born drummer and composer Jürg Wickihalder, born in 1973, is the youngest member of the trio. He graduated from the Lucerne School of Music, and the prestigious Berklee College of Music where he crossed paths with Joe Viola, George Garzone and Steve Lacy. Especially Lacy, one of the most acclaimed soprano saxophone players in jazz, became a great influence on his work. Another influence was Irène Schweizer, with whom he created a duo in 2000. In 2014 they released their album Spring(Intakt Records). He has also worked with pianist Chris Wiesendanger.
Lucas Niggli (born in 1968) is a drummer gifted with an extraordinary sense of rhythm, who feels equally at ease in jazz, noise and ethnic music. He has worked with such renowned artists as John Cale, Pierre Favre, Butch Morris, Trevor Watts, Fred Frith, Hans Koch, Peter Kowald, Tom Cora, Ikue Mori, Irene Schweizer, Susanne Abbuehl and Wu Wei. Between 1987 and 1995 he was part of a trio called Kieloor Entartet. Niggli went on to form the avantcore trio Steamboat Switzerland with Dominik Blum and Marino Plikas. In 2016 Niggli released Kalo-Yele, an album he recorded with Aly Keïta and Jan Galega Brönnimann.
