Fay Victor was born in New York and began her career there, but in 1995 she decided that it was time to shake things up in her musical environment and moved to the Netherlands, where she created two solo albums. In 2003, she returned to New York and founded the Fay Victor Ensemble. Her brutally honest, avant-garde voice has been compared to a rock Billie Holiday, and she herself calls her technique “freesong”, which seems more than fitting. Victor serves up vocal abstractions, witty comments, hitherto unheard and disturbing sounds, making her own voice a unique and unforgettable instrument. Fay Victor will be accompanied by the remarkable pianist Elisabeth Harnik, and Dominic Lash, a phenomenal British improviser, on double bass.
For years, Victor has drawn admiration from the world of free-improv and beyond. The New York Times called her “artistically complete”, and The Wall Street Journal stated that “The whole legacy of Jazz is in her voice”. Ed Pinsent from The Sound Projector further elaborated on her work when reviewing Reddeer’s debut album New York – St. Johann (2017, Evil Rabbit Records): “I think Reddeer are onto something all their own, which is powerful and strange; evidently, it’s something needs to be played out on the arena, rather than discussed at home”. Looks like it’s going to be an eventful evening at Alchemia!
