MARTIN KÜCHEN’S ANGLES 8 (Sweden)
This year’s Krakow Jazz Autumn will be opened by Martin Küchen’s band, Angles 8 (14 October, Alchemia). The Swedish saxophonist is said to be one of Europe’s most extraordinary improvisers and an incredibly uncompromising musician.

Born in 1966, the saxophone virtuoso feels equally at home in free jazz bands and in projects which move towards the avant-garde. In his early years he performed as a rock drummer and singer, but with time he began focusing on jazz and improvisation. He’s been active on the free jazz scene since the mid Nineties, when he performed on the streets and in Stockholm metro stations. Küchen has also travelled to Africa for some weeks to play with local artists. All these experiences have influenced his signature style of playing.

The band Angles was formed in 2007. Apart from Angles, Martin Küchen has played in Exploding Customer (with Tomas Hallonsten, Benjamin Quigley and Kjell Nordeson), Sound of Mucus (with Herman Müntzing and Andreas Axelsson) and Unsolicited Music Ensemble (together with Tony Wren and Raymond Strid).

Küchen returns to Kraków after a 3-year absence. Last time he gave a spirited solo performance.

Now he’s back with with his band Angles, which has evolved from a six-piece to a ten-piece. Regardless of the numbers, Angles is well worth seeing live. In the words of reviewer Guy Peters, it’s “an emotional roller coaster, a punch in the stomach”.

The band consists of:

Magnus Broo (trumpet),

Eirik Hegdal (baritone saxophone & soprano saxophone),

Mats Äleklint (trombone),

Martin Küchen (alto saxophone),

Johan Berthling (bass),

Alexander Zethson (piano),

Mattias Ståhl (vibraphone),

and Kjell Nordeson (drums).
