TAMAYA HONDA
Tamaya Honda is currently one of Japan’s most influential drummers. He comes from a musical family with very strong jazz traditions. Honda’s professional career began when, at age 13, he started playing drums in his father’s Takehiro Honda’s band Native Son.
He has worked with the most cutting-edge Japanese drummers. Around 2000 Tamaya Honda expanded his range of interests to include free jazz, which organically led him to working with Michiyo Yagi and Akira Sakata, and later on with also with Peter Brötzmann. Honda plays in Michiyo Yagi Double Trio and Dojo.
WACŁAW ZIMPEL
Wacław Zimpel is a classically trained clarinetist and composer. He draws most of his inspiration from church music and from the ritual music of different cultures. Zimpel’s compositions often contain references to early music, which makes them a kind of contemporary polemic (or commentary) to musical traditions.
He is the leader of Hera, the Polish-German band Wacław Zimpel Quarter, and the Indian-Polish outfit Saagara (rooted in Carnatic music), and the Warsaw nonet ToTu Orchestra; he also plays in Resonance and in Ken Vandermark’s band. Zimpel has collaborated with Hamid Drake, Joe McPhee, Mikołaj Trzaska, Michael Zerang, Klaus Kugel, Christian Ramond, Giridhar Udupa, Steve Swell, Bobby Few, Mark Tokar and Perry Robinson.
